So the first time I was exposed to “drinking chocolate” was Christmas 2005 when my Aunt & Uncle gave it to us as a Christmas present. I wish I could remember the brand… it came in a pretty red & gold tin, along with these ginormous, square marshmallows. When I popped opened the tin to prepare us some hot chocolate, I was surprised to see it filled to the brim, not with cocoa powder, but chocolate shavings!
Drinking chocolate… or hot chocolate is nothing like “hot cocoa” which is made with cocoa powder where most of the cocoa butter is extracted… like Swiss Miss, Nestle, etc… while “drinking chocolate” contains melted dark chocolate with all the cocoa-butter richness! While hot cocoa is chocolaty… drinking chocolate is thick, rich, chocolate.
Once JRoc tried his first cup of drinking chocolate, he refused to turn back to the “powdered stuff”… seriously, no comparison… this stuff is sooo good!
Note: The original recipe also called for heavy cream, but just seeing that made me feel like my arteries were clogging up… of course, you can add some if you want… but it’s just as rich and yummy without… 🙂
